Understanding Data and Index Compression in SAP ASE 16

Presenter:
Chris Brown, Solution Expert, Global Centre of Excellence for Data Management, SAP

As OLTP databases grow into the 10's of Terabytes, compression of both data and indexes becomes madatory to maintain low in TCO. In SAP ASE 15.7, we added data compression that uniquely balances storage savings with run-time performance. In SAP ASE 16, we extend this innovation to indices as well. This session will review the internals of SAP ASE compression for both data and indices while offering the best practices to enable DBAs to effectively balance the system for maximum performace at minimum storage costs.

Managing Multi-Terabyte OLTP databases in SAP ASE

Presenter:
Peter Thawley – VP & Chief Technology Advisor, CTO Office, SAP GCO

As a result of SAP ASE's support of the SAP applications, the number of multi-TB VLDB's on SAP ASE has increased significantly. Now, low single digit TB implementations are quite common but we are starting to see a few implementations in the 10-15TB range. This has exposed a number of issues concerning how to effectively manage such systems with considerable focus on operational DBA tasks and overall system availability. This session takes a look at enhancements in SAP ASE 15.7 and forthcoming 16.0 that reduce time for create index and update statistics as well as enhancements such as online index creation/online reorgs and addresses the age-old but oft plaguing issues of dbcc's, backups and storage implementation.

How to Blow Through Replication Agent Speed Traps

Presenter:
Chris Brown, Solution Expert, Global Centre of Excellence for Data Management, SAP

One of the trickiest challenges with the implementations of SAP Replication Server (SRS) is tuning RepAgent for optimal throughput. In SRS 15.7 and SAP ASE 15.7 releases, SAP introduced multiple new features to resolve the bottlenecks and allow RepAgent to achieve phenomenal throughput. This new functionality includes multi-threaded RepAgents inside ASE, based on schema login, sessions or data hash; LTL statement cache; asynchronous / parallel parsing, and other tunable features. This session explores these features and explains when to use them, how to determine them when they might be necesary and / or desirable, and also offers other implementation recommendations.
